As the previous owner, Teikyo University Group acquired the former Loretto Heights College in 1989 for the purpose of expanding an international campus and program with a University. In 2010, Denver Public Schools, also interested in providing educational opportunities to middle and high school students partnered with the Teikyo group to utilize the assets of the campus. The partnership included an expansion of school program choices for Southwest Early College, Summit Academy, and Denver School of Science and Technology. Additionally the partnership included the acquisition of property for Summit Academy, and Denver School of Science and Technology. The Denver Public Schools project management team was led by Allen Balczarek and Andrew Robinson. Both Robinson and Balczarek were responsible for negotiating, renovating, and managing the transition to new and remodeled facilities.
Program management included challenging negotiations with the Japanese owned group for leasing and renovating existing facilities. The long-term District goals were to renovate a historic facility for Summit Academy, provide a transition to a new location and facility for Summit Academy, lease and renovate a library media center for the temporary placement of Denver School of Science and Technology, and purchase and develop a site for a new Denver School of Science and Technology facility. Moreover, the project site had a building that was environmentally unsafe and required abatement and demolition prior to any on-site development. The DPS team provided a remediation plan and approval by City Planning. The above projects covered several transitional phases leading to a 26 million dollar new facility completed in 2013/2014, plus the building of a 4 million dollar cafeteria including land negotiations. The success of this campus project led to a new comprehensive school that has won acclaim for its performance and community centered values.
